AI agents in Carinthian businesses: where they already take over work
AI agents already take over repetitive checking and data-entry work in Carinthian businesses. Usage figures, an example from the State of Carinthia and why a person always approves at the end.
The short answer: yes, they already do. An AI agent is a program that handles a recurring task on its own, step by step, and only asks a person for approval. In Carinthian businesses it mostly takes over what runs the same way every time: transferring data from an email or a PDF into business software, checking incoming documents for completeness, querying a portal on a regular basis. The technology is ready for this. The hurdle lies elsewhere.
How many Carinthian businesses use AI today?
More than many people think, but far from a majority. According to Statistics Austria, around 23.6 percent of Carinthian companies with ten or more employees used artificial intelligence in 2025. In 2024 it was 18.6 percent, in 2023 only 8.2 percent. The rise is steep. Across Austria the figure is around 30 percent, across the EU around 20 percent.
Put the other way round: around three in four Carinthian businesses with ten or more employees still used no AI in 2025. Anyone who starts a clear, small use case now gains a real head start before everyone else does.
Statistics Austria highlights one feature specifically for Carinthia: here, AI for automating workflows is more common than AI for pure data analysis. That fits the region. Carinthia is more industrial than the Austrian average, with the production sector accounting for 36.3 percent of value added compared with 27.4 percent in Austria. Add a strong tourism sector with more than 13 million overnight stays in 2025, plus many trades and service businesses. All of them generate the same paperwork every day, and that is exactly what an agent takes over.
An example from Carinthia: the State's AI agent
You do not have to look far. The State of Carinthia has run its own data-protected AI system in the regional administration since December 2024, known as KärntenGPT. Since January 2026 it has operated its first real AI agent: it automatically checks the documents for the oil-heating replacement grant for completeness and correctness, then presents them to case handlers for final approval. The data does not leave the State's data centres in the process.
This example shows the pattern that also works in a business. The agent does the tedious groundwork that would otherwise eat up time. The decision stays with a person. And sensitive data stays in house. AI can be set up in a Carinthian business in exactly this way, whether it is grant applications, delivery notes or orders.
Where an agent really takes over work
Good tasks for an AI agent share three characteristics. The task occurs frequently. It mostly follows the same pattern. And at the end, a person can check the result quickly. Typical examples from everyday work:
- Transferring data from an order, a delivery note or an invoice into business software.
- Checking incoming documents for completeness and flagging what is missing, as the State of Carinthia does.
- Querying a supplier or authority portal on a regular basis and passing on the result.
- Reading values from an old program that has no export function.
Less suitable are rare special cases and workflows with many exceptions. The effort rarely pays off there. The right first step is therefore not a grand AI strategy, but a single workflow that occurs often and costs a lot of time.
Why a person always approves at the end
An agent that is allowed to act on its own can also get it wrong. That is why we build every agent so that a person keeps the final decision, exactly as the State of Carinthia does. The agent proposes, the person approves or corrects. This takes hardly any time, but it prevents expensive mistakes.
Then there is the question that Carinthian businesses often ask first: which data does the AI see? Anyone who does not want to send customer data to a third-party cloud can run the agent with a local model on their own server. The data then stays in house. In addition, our AIROS Gateway checks what goes to external AI services before it leaves. That way you can use AI without giving up control of your own data.
What this means for your business in Carinthia
The technology is no longer a topic for the future, it is already running in production in Carinthia. The typical hurdle is rarely the AI itself, but the first workflow you start with. We look at a concrete workflow with you, build the agent with its own account, tight rights and clear approval, and integrate it into your existing software. How we support businesses in Villach, Klagenfurt and across Carinthia is described under AI consulting in Carinthia.
